Graduate Management Admission Test

GMAT and its Importance

The Graduate Management Admission Test, or GMAT, is a computer adaptive test to assess the readiness of candidates to attend graduate management programs. The test measures analytical and quantitative aptitudes and English reading and writing skills in students willing to pursue postgraduate business studies like the Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Master in Management (MIM) programs. Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), an association of international graduate business schools, owns and administers the test across 114 countries globally.

Created by the B-schools to make their admission selection process convenient and fair, GMAT is aligned to the precise requirements of graduate business programs, evaluating the critical thinking and reasoning skills of candidates to assess their suitability for pursuing the career path. Appearing for the test confirms your seriousness about pursuing an education in business management. Take a promising stride towards your MBA goals with GMAT Coaching at our GMAT classes lead by the experts today!

GMAT helps eliminate bias in the selection process of B-Schools. Admission panel members may have different perspectives while reviewing the academic records, work experience, LoRs, essays and interview performance of applicants. However, the GMAT score is the only standardized element in thousands of applications that helps the panelists conclusively evaluate candidates. Importance of GMAT from the Student’s Perspective

A successful career in business management needs executives to be adept at data analysis, critical reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making. As one of the crucial selection criteria for admission into top-tier global business management programs, GMAT measures your competence in these skills to certify your readiness to adapt to B-School rigor. Appearing for the test gives you a competitive edge in the vast applicant pool. If your undergraduate GPA is falling short of the class average at the school of your choice, you can make up for it with a stellar GMAT score. Moreover, a strong GMAT score also gives you a fighting chance to win a merit scholarship, thus reducing the financial load considerably. With expert GMAT Coaching getting a top score in the test can become a reality.

Understanding the GMAT Structure

For a little over three hours, the GMAT assesses quantitative and verbal reasoning and analytical writing skills of test-takers. Structured into four sections with a specific number of questions and corresponding time limit, you can choose among three set orders in which these sections appear during the test.

Analytical Writing Assessment

All these skills are integral to your success in a graduate management program, and UniApplica GMAT classes can help you strengthen these in a focused and time-bound manner through their exceptional GMAT training resources.

Let us look at the questions you will face in each section.

Quantitative Reasoning

This section poses two question types – Problem-Solving and Data Sufficiency. To attempt this section, you have to combine your logical and analytical reasoning skills with the knowledge of quantitative techniques. You would need a conceptual understanding of elementary arithmetic, algebra and geometry. You cannot use calculators in this section.

Verbal Reasoning

The Verbal Section has three question types: Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning, and Sentence Correction. Further sub-types in reading comprehension and critical reasoning questions test specific verbal skills.

Integrated Reasoning

The Integrated Reasoning Section comprises Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation, and Two-Part Analysis questions. Both quantitative and verbal reasoning skills are required to answer these questions. Some integrated reasoning questions may ask for more than one response, and you will receive credit only if you answer all parts of the question. This section allows the use of a basic onscreen calculator.

Analytical Writing Assessment

The Analytical Writing Assessment section asks you to analyze an argument to discuss its appropriateness. The organization and presentation of your thoughts forms the bases of your grades in this section. This section is rated by approved human assessors and AI. In the case of a mismatch between both ratings, a third review by an additional human assessor attempts to adjust the anomaly. During your GMAT training you’ll be able to prepare yourself practically through the mock tests as they use the same scoring pattern which can give you an idea about the areas of improvement needed.

Acceptance of GMAT

Designed for admissions into management programs, statistics related to the widespread acceptance of GMAT are compelling. 100,000+ B-school aspirants take the GMAT annually to enrol in business management programs, demonstrating their abilities and commitment towards business studies and a corresponding career. 9 out of 10 MBA admissions are through GMAT. Last but not the least, for 7,700+ programs in 2400+ schools spread over 110+ countries, GMAT is an important selection criterion. Open the doors of your dream B-school with GMAT coaching at UniApplica GMAT classes.

Preparing for GMAT

GMAT is your ticket to a rewarding career after your education and preparing for the same is no mean task. However, how much time you invest in preparation is a call that only you can take. According to a GMAC survey, 62% of test takers start their test prep at least four weeks before the test date. Candidates who studied 60 hours or more scored 500+ on the test. GMAT coaching can help you with a focused study plan to get your target score.

How soon you start your prep will depend upon your level of test preparedness and your target score.

Ideally, your test prep should start with researching the required GMAT score at the B-school of your choice. Next comes testing with a practice GMAT test to identify your strengths and weaknesses. Join GMAT classes with a proven track record for guidance. Once you have identified the skills you need to brush up on and the skills that you need to master, you can set up a self study plan that suits your learning pace. Please note that professional GMAT coaching can effectively complement our self study in preparation for the test.

Although an exclusive self-study seems a great idea, however scoring high on the GMAT needs expert mentorship to give your preparation direction and sharpen your skills in a shorter time. Moreover, with bespoke GMAT coaching, you can acquire time-tested test strategies and tips from experienced trainers. Call us today to learn more about UniApplica GMAT classes!

Percentile ranking indicates the number of candidates who did better than you and also those that did not. Although scores do not change over time, yet percentile rankings may change owing to annual recalculation using data from the previous three years. UniApplica: Your Comprehensive Guide for All Essential Study Information, Anytime, Anywhere

There are no specific eligibility criteria for GMAT except that candidates between 13 and 17 years should have written permission from their parents or legal guardians. Apart from this, you should meet the eligibility conditions set by the schools of your choice.

GMAC does not specify any educational qualification requirement to appear in the GMAT. For B-schools, undergraduate GPA is a small part of an MBA Application and does not negatively impact your candidature if you have a strong GMAT score. So, if your undergraduate GPA does not match the class average of your preferred school, work towards getting a high score with professional GMAT coaching to up your chances of getting the admission offer.

You can take GMAT 5 times in a 12-month period with a maximum of 8 attempts in a lifetime. But, considering that appearing for the GMAT is expensive, the target is to get a high score on the first attempt with proven GMAT Training.

During GMAT registration, you can select up to 5 programs to share your scores. Beyond this, every additional program to share your GMAT score report costs $35 each, payable through mba.com. The free scores are shared within 48 hours of the release of results, which is between 7 to 20 working days. However, it may take longer if the school wants a paper report. If you have taken the GMAT at a test centre, the additional schools will get the test report digitally within 24 hours of your request, while GMAT Online results are shared within 8 hours.

The test structure, duration, scoring, results timeline, and validity remain the same for both GMAT online and GMAT at the Test Centre, although the fee is a little higher for the former. You can take the online test around the clock while the test at a test centre is available 7-days a week. Both versions of GMAT allow booking up to 6 months in advance. You will get a 5-page laminated booklet and two dry-erase markers for scratch work in GMAT at the test centre. You may use your physical whiteboard or access an online whiteboard for GMAT online.

GMAT Online scores are reported separately from GMAT at test centre scores. However, appearing for GMAT Online will not impact your B-school application in any way because GMAC administers these tests in close collaboration with business schools, thus guaranteeing the validity of GMAT Online scores.

GMAC launched the GMAT Focus Edition in 2023 as a shorter and more precise testing of your business acumen. GMAT Focus Edition is only 2 hours 15 minutes long, with three sections – Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights. The test does not have an Analytical Writing Assessment section. The testing focus is on data literacy, critical reasoning and problem-solving skills. GMAT Focus Edition comes with some unique features:

  • You can set the order in which the sections appear in the test.
  • Bookmark questions for review and change up to 3 answers per section.
  • Opt to share your score only after you know how you performed.
  • Detailed performance insights included in the improved Official Score Report.

Further, GMAC has updated the score scale for the Focus Edition to reflect changes in the test-taking population correctly. The new scale ranges from 205 to 805, and the Total Score comprises all sectional scores. Sectional scores range from 60 to 90.

A computer-adaptive test means that the test adapts to your performance during the test. Depending on whether you are answering the questions right or wrong, the difficulty level gets adjusted. The downside of this feature is that you cannot go back to previous questions, as the difficulty level of each subsequent question is based on the one immediately before. Whether you are sure about the answer or not, you will have to select a response to every question in the test. GMAT works on the same principle. During your GMAT coaching at one of our GMAT classes we will train you in a way that you are completely aware about all the facts related to this tests right from the beginning.

Your GMAT Official Score Report features a percentile ranking against each score element. This percentile ranking compares your performance vis-a-vis other test-takers. If your score is in the 90th percentile – it implies that your performance is better than 90 per cent of the candidates who took the test and only 10 per cent of candidates are ahead of you.
