DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) or the German Academic Exchange Service scholarships, awarded to full-time postgraduate students with a minimum of 2-years of work experience. The monthly stipend for Master’s and Doctoral DAAD scholarship awardees is €850 and €1200, respectively.

The Heinrich Böll Foundation disburses about 1,200 scholarships annually to students with exemplary academic records who study in Germany across academic levels at state or state-recognized universities. The scholarship is awarded for a scheduled study period with the possibility of an extension by a semester. Stipend amounts vary for EU and non-EU students.

The Deutschlandstipendium is awarded by German Universities to academically strong students through a private-public collaborative fund in the country. Applicants have to fulfil the eligibility criteria of the awarding university. The scholarship is generally awarded for two semesters but can be extended to cover the full-study period. Awardees are reviewed periodically to check compliance with the scholarship conditions. Through this scholarship, students can avail of various networking and mentoring events and internship opportunities.

International students with excellent academic records and pursuing master’s or doctorate studies in Germany can apply for the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Scholarship, awarded for the scheduled length of study. Such candidates should have completed their graduation in their home country. This program prefers doctoral candidates from developing countries. The stipend amounts to €850 and €1100 per month for Master’s and Doctoral students, respectively.

International applicants pursuing doctorate studies at a state or state-recognized university of applied sciences in Germany can apply for the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung scholarship. Competition is stiff since only forty candidates can receive the funding every year. Applicants should have spectacular academic records and excellent proficiency in the German language.

  • Students pursuing a language or preparatory course can only work during the breaks with express permission from the employment agency and foreigner’s office.
  • Typical part-time jobs in Germany include academic assistantships, waiting tables, assisting at trade fairs, courier services and babysitting.
  • The current minimum wage in Germany is €12 an hour, although your earnings will largely depend upon the sector you work in, your skills, and the state of the local labour market. Please note that the average hourly wage is often higher for academic assistants, industrial production assistants or service staff at trade fairs.
  • If you earn more than €520 a month, you will have to pay taxes at source. You also need to file a tax return at the end of the year.

Of course, if you are applying for a German-taught course, you will have to showcase a high proficiency level in the language. And, if you are applying for an English-taught program, you may still have to be proficient in German besides English.

FAQs

Why Study Abroad With UniApplica?

UniApplica covers the basics every Study needs. For everything, Anything.

There are very few English-taught undergraduate degree courses in Germany’s Public Universities, although you may find many postgraduate programs that are offered in English. There are private universities in the country that offer programs in English. Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Economics, Engineering, Law, and Social Sciences are the areas where you can find an English-taught degree in Germany. Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Language and Cultural Studies, Art, and Sports are the fields where you are least likely to find an English-taught program.

The Germany Education Consultants at UniApplica can assist you with the universities that offer English-taught programs in the country.

In Germany, a university is Universität, and a university of applied science is Fachhochschule. The former has the authority to award doctorate degrees, follow the rigor of theory and research, and offer a multitude of degrees across levels in different academic disciplines. The latter, on the other hand, concentrates on practical studies with professional application, offering programs in engineering, natural sciences, and business administration. Further, a Fachhochschule is not authorized to award doctorate degrees, and a graduate from Fachhochschule is likely to be ineligible for a PhD. Internships are a mandatory part of a Fachhochschule curriculum, while at Universität, an internship is part of the curriculum, depending upon the program of study. Finally, a Universität degree is flexible and students often take longer than the set schedule to finish the program owing to difficult examinations. Fachhochschule degrees are not flexible and students finish the program within the planned duration.

Not sure which course you should pursue? Talk to one of the Germany Study Abroad Consultants at UniApplica for guidance.

Although proficiency in German is not mandatory for English-taught programs in Germany, knowing the language can make living, studying and working in the country easier. Besides, if you are proficient in German, your choice of institution and program increases manifold, and you will not have to restrict yourself to the programs delivered in English. Lastly, knowing the major language can also be advantageous for job prospects. The Germany Education Consultants at UniApplica can guide you with language courses to build your proficiency in German.

Higher education for international students in Germany is not exactly free of charge. Students in all public universities in Germany have to pay a semester-wise administration fee, generally within €250, instead of a hefty tuition fee. An exception to this scenario is the institutions in Baden-Württemberg, where students from non-EU/EEA countries have to pay a tuition fee of €1,500 per semester. Private universities, however, charge tuition fees for their programs. Having said that, the cost of education in Germany is much lower compared to other popular study destinations.

Do check with the qualified study in Germany consultants at UniApplica for more info in this regard.
