Significance of GRE
GRE General and Subject Tests assist institutions by making the admission and fellowship decision-making process fair and convenient. For admission panelists to choose from a large pool of applications from diverse backgrounds, including variations in grading systems, programs pursued, and differing academic rigor is a tall task. GRE helps level out all these differences for a holistic evaluation of applicants. The GRE scores provide a reliable correlation with academic readiness and performance to shortlist candidates who may not have strong LoRs but are capable of exemplary performance in class. Take up GRE coaching to help you make an impactful application for graduate studies with a stellar test score.
GRE has proved its worth as a reliable testing system repeatedly by attempting to improve upon test content to align with institutional requirements, delivery of the test to suit test-takers, and scoring patterns to adjust variances in test-takers profiles. The most current update of GRE tests, effective September 22, 2023 onwards, has shortened test lengths, structural alterations, and shorter results timeline.
You can take the GRE General Test at 1,000+ test centres in 160+ countries. ETS also offers proctored tests from the comfort of your home. The GRE Subject tests were paper-based and available only three times a year at select test centres. However, with the upcoming changes, the Subject tests will now be computer-delivered and available frequently in more test centres and at home. Test Preparation: Self Study or GRE Coaching?
Considering that achieving a good GRE score is one of the most important steps in your graduate studies dream, you should pay serious attention to your preparation. Specifying the test preparation timeline is difficult as there is no one-size-fits-all test prep plan. Ideally, thorough research about the latest GRE score class average at the schools of your choice will reveal your target score. Next, establish your baseline or current proficiency level, which should be done through a full-length simulated mock test. The gap between the practice test scores and your target score is what you need to bridge through preparation. Depending upon your test preparedness, you may need 4 weeks to 24 weeks to level up and achieve your target score. However, the key to rock-solid GRE preparation is a clear understanding of the test structure and consistent practice to eliminate all doubts.
You can get help from GRE Coaching professionals with a customized prep plan to overcome your weaknesses in the test content. ETS offers several online programs for GRE preparation, including practice test series. You could also consider self-study to prepare for the test. But nothing can beat the personal guidance you can get through one-to-one GRE coaching. Signing up for GRE coaching classes will help you focus, besides getting a ready-made environment to push your limits consistently for test prep. The UniApplica GRE Coaching classes are committed to helping you scale the test with personalized mentoring and continuous practice tests to familiarize yourself with the testing system.

GRE Scores Explained
In GRE General, both Verbal and Quantitative measures are adaptive, meaning that the difficulty level of the second section of both measures depends upon your performance in the first. The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning raw scores, or the number of correct responses you gave during the test are scaled to accommodate minor variations in difficulty level owing to section-level adaptation and between different test editions.
A trained rater and a computerized scoring engine scores the Analytical Writing section on a scale of 1 to 6. If scores from both are close, then the average becomes your final Analytical Writing score. In case of broader anomaly, a second human rating is conducted to find the average between the two human scorers.
The score scale for GRE General is presented here.
Section | Score Scale | Mean Score |
Verbal Reasoning | 130–170, in 1-point increments | 150.94 |
Quantitative Reasoning | 130–170, in 1-point increments | 155.44 |
Analytical Writing | 0–6, in half-point increments | 3.56 |
GRE Subject Tests are graded on a scale of 200 to 990 in 10-point increments. Each section forms a part of the score range. The total scaled score derived from the total correct score you achieved in the test in a way that allows comparison of the same scaled score earned on any other edition of the test.
The September 2023 update of GRE will also see the reporting of three per cent and six per cent correct sub scores on a scale of 0 – 100, in 1-point increments for the Physics and Psychology Tests, respectively.
GRE Subject Test Mean score recorded by ETS during July 2018 and June 2022 is presented here.
Subject Test | Mean Score |
Mathematics | 674 |
Physics | 715 |
Psychology | 620 |

UniApplica: Your Comprehensive Guide for All Essential Study Information, Anytime, Anywhere
The GRE is not an easy test to clear, considering that it is one of the screening methods in some of the top-tier graduate schools of the world. However, diligent preparation with focused mentoring from professional GRE Coaching classes can make the test a breeze. The most challenging part of the GRE has to be time management, besides handling the mathematical concepts, if you have not been in touch with the subject for years. You need a strong sense of vocabulary to understand the trickily worded questions and have clear reasoning skills to apply logic to find the correct answer. If you are not digitally savvy, handling a computerized test may intimidate you on the test date, thus bringing down your score. Finally, since the GRE is an adaptive test, the difficulty level and scoring potential of the subsequent sections depend upon your performance in the former. To overcome these challenges, you need intense guided practice with trusted GRE coaching.
No, the GRE is not compulsory for a MS degree in the US. In one hand, many institutions have waived the GRE criteria for graduate admissions, while on the other, most top universities still consider GRE scores for screening candidates. Whether waived off or required, your GRE score can help you make a strong statement in front of the admission panelists and boost your application a few notches higher. Join UniApplica GRE Coaching classes today to give your graduate application in the USA a competitive advantage.
ETS does not specify any eligibility criteria to take the GRE. Practically anyone can take the test, irrespective of age or qualifications.
