Everything You Need to Know About the SAT Structure
The SAT evaluates candidates on their Reading, Writing and Mathematics skills learnt at high school. Although you can take the SAT as a paper-based test in the USA, internationally, the test is available only in digital format. Whether you are taking the paper-based or the Digital test, sign up for trustworthy SAT prep courses to ensure getting a good score for your college application.
Here, we elaborate on the significant differences in the two testing formats of SAT.
Most questions in both formats are multiple-choice, and there is no provision for negative marking. The paper-based SAT has three sections: Reading, Writing and Language, and Math, while the digital version has two – Reading and Writing combined into one and Math. The digital SAT has two equal-length modules in each section wherein the difficulty level of the second module questions depends upon how you fare in the preceding module. With established SAT courses, you can promptly acquire the skills needed to handle any questions of increasing difficulty level at the actual test and thus have a better percentile ranking and score range. The paper-based test allowed calculator usage for only specific math tasks, but the new SAT allows the use of a calculator throughout the Math section.
Let us look at the sections of the Digital SAT since the College Board plans to replace the paper-based test by end of 2023.
Test Sections
| Paper-based SAT | Digital SAT | ||
Number of Tasks | Minutes Allotted | Number of Tasks | Minutes Allotted
Reading | 52 | 65 | 54 | 64 (two 32-minute modules) |
Writing and Language | 44 | 35
Math | 58 | 80 | 44 | 70 (two 35-minute modules) |
Total | 154 | 180 | 98 | 134 |

The questions will be related to Craft and Structure, Information and Ideas, Standard English Conventions, and Expression of Ideas. The length of the passages ranges between 25 – 150 words and may cover topics from literature, history/social studies, the humanities, and science.
The Math section
Enhance your high-school Math skills in Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, Geometry and Trigonometry with trusted SAT prep courses. There will be multiple-choice and student-produced response questions to measure the clarity of concepts and application skills to real-world scenarios.

The College Board does not specify any eligibility criteria to appear for the SAT. Since the test is for college admissions, high school students can take the test. Statistics reveal that test-takers of the 17 – 19 age group is most common.
Unlike other standardized tests, SAT scores do not have an expiry date. However, most colleges that still list the SAT as a prerequisite for admission application do not accept scores older than 5 years.
Ideally, you should attempt the SAT during the fag-end of grade 11 to allow you enough time to retake the test in case the scores from the first attempt are not adequate for your intended college application. But, since taking the test multiple times involves cash outlay, you can sign up for trusted SAT classes in your grade 11 and take the test early on during grade 12.
Carefully consider your college application deadlines, results timeline, availability of preferred test date and centre, and your preparation status before choosing an SAT schedule. The College Board recommends taking the test in the spring of your junior year and retesting again in the fall. The retest is to improve your scores, but you can always attempt to hit the ball out of the park at the first attempt with proven SAT Coaching.
With majority of colleges turning test-optional, there is no specific good SAT score. Nevertheless, a SAT score does earn you a competitive edge and hence aiming higher above the 75th percentile or 1200 total score at the least makes sense to improve your chances of getting an offer from your dream college. An alternative could be finding the class average of SAT scores for each SAT course at the college of your choice to set your target. Whether your target score is above 1200 or below it, you can achieve it with time-tested SAT classes.
Students of grades 11 and 12 from low-income families in the U.S. or U.S. territories are eligible for a SAT fee waiver. The consideration is also valid for U.S. citizens living outside the country.
The Digital SAT is an app-based test. You need to download the College Board testing application Bluebook to your device. The app works in tandem with the Test Day Toolkit – a web app that SAT test centre staff use to administer the test. You use a Windows laptop or tablet, a Mac laptop or iPad, or a school-managed Chromebook. Download the app on your device before the test date and follow the instructions to get test-ready. On the test date, you will have to check in to the app at the test centre and follow the instructions to complete the test.
At UniApplica SAT classes, we ensure that you get familiarized with the Bluebook platform and practice for the test so that on test day, you do not face any hiccups.
SAT is graded using systematic quality-control measures to ensure the accuracy of your test score. If you still wish to review your scores on a paper-based SAT, you can avail of an answer verification service. Depending on when and where you attempted the test, you can opt for either the Question-and-Answer Service (QAS) or the Student Answer Service (SAS).
Information on the verification service ordered will be available online with your score report. Please note that the verification service is not available for SAT digital at the moment.
Ask your Uniapplica SAT courses mentor about when you should request a verification service.
You can opt for Score Choice for any score reports you send online or by phone. Please note that the option is not available for the free score you chose at the time of SAT registration.
If you do not opt to use Score Choice, all your scores will be shared with the colleges you choose to share them with. However, most colleges consider the best of your SAT scores. So, if you are not sure which score to share, you can simply opt to send all your scores for the college to decide.
Got more questions about the Score Choice? Ask the experts at UniApplica SAT Coaching.
No, you cannot choose to share your Reading and Writing sectional scores from one test day and Math scores from another. Score Choice is applicable only by test date and all scores of the particular test are sent to the colleges of your choice. However, some colleges that ask for all your SAT scores use super scoring to take into account only the highest sectional scores across multiple test dates.
